Dear Reader,
It gives us immense pleasure to enlighten upon the recent activities that have been successfully organized by the Civil Engineering Society, IIT Kharagpur.
Well to start with, we had the a cricket match between the professors and the students of the society. Even though it was a very hot day, we are very thankful to one and all who made this match a great experience for the society in general, and for the out-going batch of 2008 in particular. We especially thank the faculty for taking time from their extremely schedule and coming to motivate the spirits of the society. The outcome of the match was the winning of the students team [:)] but the success of the society as a whole. The enthusiasm and the jolly mood is clearly visible in the following photos.
Yes, we were on a Picnic.!! Two buses loaded with the society members departed from Tikka’s for the riverside at Basraghat. They say pictures are worth a thousand words. Well I guess it is true for sure given the fun we had at Basraghat, cannot possibly be expressed in words as it is depicted in the photos below. We especially thank Prof. S Dey and Prof. S. K. Barai for the immense support they provided, to make this day come true. Also, we would like give a special mention to Raghuvamsi for the immense effort he put up in making this trip possible. (That was, really, a very nice lunch.) We also like to thank all the final year students who took time to come along with us to the trip. We love you all and will definitely miss you.
Well we had fun but we sure did our homework. Academically, we had two very good seminars in this session.
Karan Doshi and Gautam Acharyya delivered an excellent tutorial on using STAAD Pro and other sister softwares that come along with STAAD Pro 2006. This series of seminars/workshops that we intend to publicize as “Student Interaction Corner” (SIC) is our effort to bring the students to discuss and share ideas, knowledge and in the process, learn from each other. In the past, SIC hosted a similar seminar on “Evolutionary Algorithms and their applications in Civil Engineering” by Shrey Modi and Vamsidhar Tankala. FYI, STAAD Pro is a software used by many civil engineers for structural design and analysis. The turnup was quite good and the tutorial was quite interactive. If time permits, we shall soon hold a similar seminar on ANSYS. But for now, here are the tutorial photos:
We also had the honor of interacting with Mr. Preetam Biswas, Senior Structural Engineer, Skidmore, Owings and Merrill LLP, Chicago, USA. He shared his experiences in Civil Engineering and particularly talked about two projects of SOM - <1> and <2>. You can view the presentation which he also delivered at University of Illinois at Urbana Campaign by clicking this link here (Please note that this link will only open in Microsoft Internet Explorer). The seminar room was practically full and the presentation was a very great experience for all of us. We thank Mr. Biswas for such a wonderful experience. Here are a few photos from the seminar.
All these achieved in one session of the society.!! What more could we ask for?
Please do leave a comment as to the functioning of CES in general, and to the new ideas/changes that you could suggest in particular.
With regards,
Civil Engineering Society.

i wish that if first year students also participate in the activities taken up by the society, interaction with the students increases and also the department would become more familiar rather than exploring it in the second year.
